How to Treat Acne: Over the Counter Vs. Prescription
When it comes to finding the best acne treatment, every company that offers them swears theirs is the answer. Simply “wash your face with this” or “rub this cream on your skin”, or “use this pad”, or “wear this mask”…and your acne will be gone. If these companies really do have all the answers, why does acne remain such a huge a problem world-wide? The fact is, each acne treatment product only works for certain people.
When finding one that will work for you, you must first gauge the severity of your acne problem. The general rule of thumb is: if your problem is only slight then use an over-the-counter product, but if the problem is more severe then you should seek a prescription acne treatment.
Just want to get rid of pimples?
If your problem is limited to a pimple or two, or if you are merely getting some skin redness, then pick up an over-the-counter acne treatment from your grocery store. There are many ointments, creams, soaps, pads, etc to choose from. Read through the labels on them, and pick the one that appeals to your problem the most. These products often contain the same active ingredients. These simple products will generally get rid of mild cases of pimple outbreaks. However, if they fail to get rid of your acne, or your problem actually gets worse, then its time to take more drastic measures.
See a dermatologist
If over-the-counter acne treatment products have let you down then its time to see a dermatologist. However you should be aware that some of these prescription strength acne treatments can affect your kidneys and lead to long-term health problems. They do prove effective in getting rid of severe acne problems though, and for that reason they are often used anyway by many severe acne sufferers. Consultation with the dermatologist will determine if you are suitable for one of these prescription medications such as Acutane, or Retin-A.
In summary, the grocery store pimple creams and ointments do work, but only for certain individuals. If you suffer from a mild form of acne, give these basic over-the-counter acne treatments a try. For severe acne problems however, a dermatologist may be your best bet.
One important fact to remember is that if you do not treat your severe acne, you could develop acne scars. This should remind you to take care of your skin, because you don’t want to carry around a permanent reminder of your acne problems for the rest of your life.
